5 Reasons Why Nothing You've Tried for Your Hair Has Worked
And What a Black Dermatologist Says You're Actually Missing
Bring Your Edges Back ⮕
I've been doing hair in Atlanta for 19 years. Nineteen years. Three chairs, same salon since 2011. And I'm tired of watching good women — women who take care of themselves, who show up every two weeks for a fresh blowout — slowly lose their edges while the industry takes their money and gives them nothing back.
A Black dermatologist who sits in my chair every other Thursday broke it down for me. Once I understood it, I started telling every woman over 45 who sits in my chair. Now I'm telling you.
Reason One
01
You're Starving Your Follicles and Nobody Told You
82% of Black women in America are clinically Vitamin D deficient. Not "a little low." Clinically deficient — that's according to NHANES, the largest nutritional study in the country.
The reason is your melanin. The same pigment that gives your skin its color blocks up to 99% of the UVB radiation your body needs to make Vitamin D from sunlight. The darker your complexion, the less you produce naturally.
Why does that matter for your hair? Because Vitamin D receptors sit directly on your hair follicles. They are required for the follicle to enter the growth phase. Without enough Vitamin D, your follicles don't die — they go dormant. They sit there starving, waiting for a signal that never comes.
And the standard recommended dose of Vitamin D? 600 IU. Same dose for a fair-skinned woman in Portland and a dark-skinned woman in Houston. Your melanin blocks 99% of UV synthesis, and the supplement industry gives you the same dose as someone whose skin synthesizes it 15 to 20 times more efficiently.
82%
Your follicles aren't dead. They're starving. And nobody adjusted the dose for your biology.
Reason Two
02
The Biotin You Tried Was Broken Before You Opened the Bottle
You bought biotin. Probably twice. Took it for a few months. Your nails got harder. Your hair didn't change. You threw the bottle away and said "supplements are a scam."
Here's what actually happened.
Standard biotin dissolves in your stomach and your body absorbs some of it. But biotin alone can't build hair — it needs silica to integrate into keratin, the structural protein hair is actually made of. Without silica, biotin is like lumber delivered to a construction site with no nails. The material's there, but nothing gets built.
And the silica in most supplements? Cheap mineral forms with less than 5% bioavailability. Your body barely absorbs them. The advanced form — orthosilicic acid — absorbs at 40 to 60 percent. But almost nobody uses it because it costs more.
So when you said "biotin doesn't work" — you were right about that biotin. The delivery system was broken from the start. The ingredient wasn't the problem. The form was wrong. And nobody told you the difference.
Reason Three
03
The Vitamins They Sell Were Made for Someone Else
The top-selling women's hair supplements — Nutrafol, Viviscal, every bottle with a smiling 25-year-old on the label — were developed with clinical trials that were over 80% white women under 40. Not one focused on Black women over 45 going through perimenopause.
The label for Nutrafol's original formula doesn't mention melanin-adjusted Vitamin D dosing. It doesn't address the DHT spike that happens during perimenopause — when estrogen drops and DHT surges and literally begins to strangle your follicles at the root. It doesn't account for the curved structure of Black hair follicles. And it has never been tested on women with decades of chemical relaxer history.
Read that again. The products the industry sells most aggressively to Black women were studied on someone else's biology. At the exact two places we lose hair first — the edges and the crown. Nobody did a follow-up study. Nobody reformulated.
And here's what nobody tells Black women about perimenopause: when estrogen drops, DHT doesn't just rise — it spikes. It wraps around your follicles and squeezes. Most hair vitamins don't even include a DHT blocker. Because they weren't built for a woman going through what you're going through after 45.
Here's the other thing nobody tells you: there's a clinical study showing that rosemary extract performed just as well as minoxidil for hair regrowth. Same results. No residue, no dry scalp, no shedding phase, no lifetime dependency. But nobody markets it because you can't patent a plant.
Black women spend $3.6 billion a year on hair care. The industry took our money. It didn't study our hair. It didn't formulate for our biology. And when nothing worked, it told us it was our genes. It wasn't our genes. It was negligence.
Reason Four

"Just Wear a Wig, Sis" Isn't a Solution — It's a Surrender
You've heard it from everyone. Your girls. Your family. The internet. "Just get a wig, sis. They look amazing now."
And if you genuinely love wigs — wear them. Own it. Rock them.
But if you're spending $300 to $350 a month hiding what's underneath because you feel like you have no other option, that's not a style choice. That's giving up. And there's a difference between a woman who chose the wig life and a woman who was forced into it.
I see both in my chair. The women who chose wigs sit down confident, ask me to style what's underneath for special occasions, bring photos of what they want. The women who were forced into it still pull at their edges when they think nobody's watching. They still wonder what they'd look like with options.
You deserve options. You deserve to sit in my chair and request a style — not ask me what we can do to cover the damage. Wanting your hair back isn't vanity. It's identity.
Reason Five
05
There's Finally Something That Was Actually Built for Your Biology
After learning all of this — the Vitamin D crisis, the biotin absorption problem, the clinical trials that excluded us, the DHT spike nobody warned us about — I started looking for something that actually addressed the real issues. Not another bottle of standard biotin. Not a supplement built for a 25-year-old who just wants longer lashes. Something designed for us.
That's when I found LUMIN.
Biotin-Silica Complex that absorbs at 40x the rate of standard biotin — not a higher dose of the same thing, a fundamentally different delivery system that actually reaches the follicle.
3x the Vitamin D of competing formulas — dosed for melanin, not for the general population.
Rosemary extract — the ingredient that matched minoxidil in clinical studies. Increases blood flow to the scalp so nutrients actually reach the follicle. Without the residue, the dry scalp, or the forever commitment.
Saw Palmetto — blocks DHT naturally. Does what the prescription does without the side effects. No prescription. No topical. No chemicals. Two gummies a day. That's it.
