3 Reasons Why Black Men Over 40 Are Losing Hair Faster Than They Should (And What a Barber of 19 Years Is Now Telling Every Client)

Bring Your Edges Back ⮕

I've been cutting hair in Atlanta for 19 years. And in the last five years, I've watched more men over 40 thin out than in the entire decade before that. Men who take care of themselves. Men who show up every two weeks. Men who do everything right — and still lose.

They try biotin. Nothing. They Google finasteride. Close the tab. They put castor oil on their pillowcase for three months. Still thinning.

Eventually, someone tells them "just shave it." And most of them do. Not because they want to — but because they think there's nothing left to try.

I used to believe that too. Until a dermatologist who sits in my chair broke down the three real reasons nothing works for us — and none of them are genetics.

Reason One

01

82% of Us Are Starving Our Hair and Don't Know It

82% of Black adults are clinically Vitamin D deficient. That's not my opinion — that's from NHANES, the largest nutritional study in America.

Melanin blocks up to 99% of the UVB radiation your body needs to produce Vitamin D. The darker your skin, the less you make naturally.

Why does that matter? Vitamin D receptors sit on your hair follicles. They're required for the follicle to enter the growth phase. Without enough Vitamin D, your follicles go dormant — not dead, but starving. Waiting for a nutrient signal that never arrives.

The standard recommended dose — 600 IU — doesn't adjust for skin color. They're giving you the same amount they give a man whose skin synthesizes Vitamin D 15 to 20 times more efficiently than yours.

8 out of 10 of the men in my chair are deficient in the one vitamin their hair needs to grow. And nobody's supplement accounts for it.

Reason Two

02

The Biotin You Tried Was Broken Before You Opened the Bottle

Standard biotin can't build hair by itself. It needs silica to integrate into keratin — the protein your hair is made of. Without silica, biotin floats through your system, does a little something for your nails, and never reaches your follicles.

And the silica in most supplements uses a cheap form with less than 5% bioavailability. Your body barely absorbs it.

The advanced form — orthosilicic acid — absorbs at 40 to 60 percent. That's 40x more usable nutrient reaching the follicle. But almost nobody uses it because it's more expensive to produce.

So the biotin you bought from CVS or Amazon? The delivery system was broken from the start. The ingredient was right. The form was wrong. And nobody told you the difference.

Reason Three

03

Every Product You've Tried Was Designed for Someone Else

Finasteride and minoxidil — the only two FDA-approved hair loss treatments — were tested on populations that were 81% white. The FDA's own Propecia label says Black men reported less satisfaction at the temples and crown — the exact locations where we lose hair first.

The label also admits: "The effect of race on finasteride pharmacokinetics has not been studied."

Minoxidil leaves white residue in textured hair and dries out already-dry Black scalps. Finasteride carries side effects that men describe as life-altering — changes in the bedroom that didn't come back even after they stopped taking it.

And here's what nobody tells you: a clinical study showed rosemary extract performed just as well as minoxidil for hair growth. Same results. No residue. No dry scalp. No shedding phase. No lifetime dependency. But you can't patent a plant, so nobody marketed it.

Black consumers spend $3.2 billion a year on hair care. The most common form of scarring hair loss in Black patients wasn't studied in Black men until 2023.

The industry took your money. It didn't study your hair. It didn't formulate for your Vitamin D needs. And when nothing worked, it told you it was genetics.

It wasn't genetics. It was negligence.

So What Actually Works?

After I learned all of this, I found one product that addresses all three problems at once.

LUMIN RRB Hair Growth Gummies.

A Biotin-Silica Complex that absorbs at 40x the rate of standard biotin — not more of the same, a different delivery system entirely. 3x the Vitamin D of competing formulas — dosed for your melanin, not the general population. Rosemary extract that matched minoxidil in clinical studies — without the mess. Saw Palmetto to block DHT naturally — without the side effects. No prescription. No topical. No chemicals. Two gummies a day.

I've been recommending it to every client over 40 in my chair. The ones who give it six weeks come back with baby hairs. The ones who give it three months come back different. Thicker crown. Temples holding. Requesting fades again instead of buzz cuts.

Nobody's come back to tell me I was wrong yet.

Six weeks for the baby hairs. Three months for the full difference.
